When buildings and structures contain explosive materials or explosive atmospheres (EX zones) then lightning protection becomes a mandatory requirement. We have to think beyond the normal scope of just applying BSEN 62305 and make some more considered decisions and provisions.

This webinar aims to cover the elements of COMAH, DSEAR, BSEN 60079, BSEN 1127 and annexe D of BSEN 62305 to fully explain the requirements for providing isolated lightning protection to high-risk structures.

How to avoid sparking, penetration, hot spots and potential sources of ignition by creating a true ‘Faraday cage’ with adequate earthing and suitable coordinated surge protection.

We will also explain why a conventional lightning protection system installed with all good intentions may actually be increasing your risks.

This webinar will also introduce the LPZ concept as it guides the installation of type 1, type 2 and type 3 surge protection devices (SPDs) within an LV installation. The origins of the concept and its integration into IEC/BS EN 62305 will be covered as well.

The equipotential bonding system is also an integral part of the concept and requires SPDs for the protective measures to be fully effective and compliant. Understanding the LPZ concept enables the designer to plan the selection of the correct SPD according to the zonal interface the SPD is protecting.

Some aspects of lightning protection design will be examined as this will impact on the LV installation. We shall look at the consequences of failing to account for the influence of lightning electromagnetic pulses (LEMP) in the fixed wiring and LV distribution system. Methods within the concept to overcome the magnetic effect in sensitive equipment shall be shown.

The applications that do not require the LPZ approach shall be explored and the occasions when the concept must be adapted for hazardous area installations.
